Camino Packing List: What to Pack for a Slackpacking Hike in South Africa
Packing for a five-day, five-night slackpacking hike in South Africa? Welcome to the Plett Camino way, where you walk light, live well, and pack smart. Whether you’re heading out on the legendary Plett Camino or another guided hiking trail, the right gear can make all the difference.
Camino Packing List Essentials
Let’s be honest: overpacking is the enemy of freedom. And the joy of slackpacking is that you only carry your daypack while the rest of your luggage is shuttled ahead. So here’s what to bring:
- Two pairs of trail shoes: one for wet days, one for dry
- Comfy hiking socks and quick-dry shirts
- Leggings or shorts, a fleece for cool nights
- Rain jacket or poncho, sunhat or cap
- Swimsuit (every lodge has a pool!)
- Sunscreen, insect repellent, Vaseline for blisters
- Toiletries, earplugs, nail clippers
- Notebook and pen, snacks, a 2L hydration system
What Not to Bring on a Camino Walk
- Anything work related !
- Heavy suitcases, fancy clothes, makeup kits
- Laptops or drones
- Water filters—we’ve got RO water covered
- Camping stoves, mosquito nets, heavy camera gear
This is your great South African Camino escape. Bring what keeps you comfortable, safe, and free to focus on the trail. Download our full Camino gear checklist and come trail-ready, soul-steady, and suitcase-light.
Listen to what our past Camino Hikers have to say :
My dear Camino friends, my heart is full.
Thank you so much. I will return home with a few scrapes and cuts. They will fade away but my memories of the Camino, never. It and you all will remain indelible in my mind. Thank you. Barry
