People often ask us how the Plett Camino began. Sometimes they ask if this is all we do. And quite often, they ask the harder question… WHY?

The first one is easy, and Yes, this is what we do, every day.

But the “why” is something else entirely. It’s not something you answer in a sentence. It’s something you feel, and if I’m honest, it’s something we’re still trying to fully put into words.

There’s something about hikers. They’re different. They don’t need fancy gear or expensive equipment. No bikes, no kayaks, no technical kit. They just arrive with a decent pair of takkies and a willingness to walk. That simplicity opens the door to people of all ages, all backgrounds, all levels of experience.

And yet, despite how different everyone is, there’s always something shared.

Over five days with us, they get to see amazing landscapes and animals, get to bond with each other, and strangers become a group. Then the group becomes something more. People walk together, talk together, and somewhere along the route they begin to share parts of their stories. And we all have one. By the end, it’s no longer just a hike. It’s connection. And more often than not, people leave as friends.

When we started Plett Camino at the end 2022, we weren’t just creating a walking route. We set about building something that could support a whole network around it. Essentially a ‘feeding station’ for all our service providers to come together and create a livelihood from this new initiative.

Guides. Accommodation partners. Caterers. SANParks. CapeNature. Transport providers. Massage therapists. Food suppliers and many others.

What matters to us is that this is new money coming into the area. It’s not taking from anyone else’s businesses. It’s adding. It’s creating opportunity, supporting livelihoods, and strengthening the local ecosystem. A rising tide lifts all boats, and we’ve seen that play out in a very real way.

That in itself is deeply rewarding. But there’s another side to it…

Imagine that the forest and the cliffs overlooking the sea are your office. And imagine that every week, people arrive carrying the weight of their normal lives, and then for a few days they get to put that down. They walk, they laugh, they reconnect with friends, or make new ones they didn’t expect.

And then, when it’s all over, the messages start coming in. Simple notes. Gratitude. Stories about what the week meant to them.

That’s the part that’s hard to explain properly. We have assembled the most magnificent team of authentic humans. People who care, who laugh, who make sure that your best experience comes first.

This is the reason we do what we do.
