So how tough is the Plett Camino really?
We are often asked this question by hikers, but how tough a hike is can be fairly tricky to answer. Tough for one person may not be so tough for another depending on fitness and experience.
Along the route, you will hike between 14km and 18km a day, with a mix of climbs descents and flat walking, so the tempo changes during each day. The profiles of each day can be found in the description of each day here .
On both day 4 and day 5 there is a climb out of the river bed up to the top of the valley. They are fairly steep, but can be done if you take a rest from time to time, but it is exhilarating and you will feel amazing at the top. Overall you will gain about 1400m in elevation over the 5 days.

One of the tougher climbs on the Plett Camino.
Is the Plett Camino a technical hike?
Technically the Camino is not as difficult as the popular Otter 🦦 Trail. If the Otter was considered to be an 8-9/10 we’d peg the Plett Camino at 6-7/10 depending on fitness. From what we can gather the other Caminos around the Western Cape are between a 5 and 7. But remember all your food and drinks are catered for along the way and we carry your large bag, so you only have to carry a little day pack. This makes a huge difference to the perceived difficulty level.
Is the Plett Camino a dangerous hike?
There are NO overhangs, ladders or ropes along the route which you would need to scale.
You need to be fit enough to be able to walk 14 km a day for 5 days in a row, but you tend to get more walking fit each day. We always say that if you can talk to your friends while walking up hill, you will be just fine on the Plett Camino.
Also on day 3 you have the option of an invigorating massage which will stand you in good stead for the remaining two days. At each lodge there is also a swimming pool to cool off and relax your feet in to get them ready for the next day.
What age group is ideal to walk the Plett Camino
Age-wise we have had hikers from the age of 20 to 84 completing the course without a hitch. Most hikers are between their 40’s and late 70’s.

Had a wonderful week hiking this Camino. Everything was organised down to the smallest detail and the team really went the extra mile. Accommodation ranged from comfortable and clean to downright luxurious, but we were never lacking for anything. The hiking itself was challenging but manageable.
